Most people know that hypnosis can help someone quit smoking, but did you know hypnosis can help change any pattern that isn’t working for you–

including how you eat, how much you earn, and who you are attracted to?

Let’s say you try to tell yourself the chocolate cake on the menu is fattening and full of sugar and you really shouldn’t have any.  Consciously it’s an easy choice:  Get the fruit plate instead and feel really good about being smart and healthy.   But this logic doesn’t work with your subconscious mind.  It remembers too many birthday parties growing up when chocolate cake meant you were celebrated, special and loved.  “Have some,” it urges you.  “Let yourself be celebrated.” “Let yourself feel loved!”

Most of our subconscious mind’s development happens in childhood when it is like a sponge making identifications and associations with the environment and belief systems of family and community.  Around the age of nine our conscious mind begins to move to the forefront, focusing on our abilities to logic, reason, make decisions and exert willpower.  But the conscious mind only holds approximately 12% of our overall brain power.  Most of what drives our thinking and behavior–  around 88%– comes from our subconscious mind and our earliest programming.

12% of our mind wanting to say “no” to chocolate cake vs. 88% saying “yes!” — an unfair fight indeed.

The subconscious mind does not judge what’s good or bad, healthy or unhealthy.  It only cares about what’s familiar and what’s unfamiliar–  what’s known and what is unknown.  And the subconscious mind does not like anything unknown.  It will go to great lengths to keep you in your “knowns”, to stay comfortable in the familiar even though this isn’t always the best thing for you.

Have you ever wondered why on earth someone who was abused in their childhood would grow up only to end up in a relationship with an abuser?  Here’s what happens:  abuse  became a ‘known’ to this person during their childhood so now as an adult when they walk into a social gathering and scan the crowd—even though their conscious mind desires to meet someone kind, intelligent and loving–  their subconscious mind is playing a kind of  match game and when it sees/senses/intuits something “familiar”—ie: an abuser–  not only does it not raise an alarm, it is ATTRACTED to this troublemaker.  A kind, intelligent, loving person may be right in front of them, but there will be no spark with this person, no indescribable electric undertow drawing them together…. no match.

This is why it is very important to know what you really desire in your life;  to make choices and set goals so that you are not at the whim of your subconscious programming.    And then, once you have an idea of what you want, this is where hypnosis—or other forms of meditation and visualization—is essential.  Because just having an idea about what you want isn’t always enough.  Often times there is not enough of an emotional “charge” attached to these ideas to get your subconscious to take them seriously and accept them as a “known”.

We are inundated with information every day.  Each night your mind sorts through all the thoughts and experiences of the day and makes assumptions as to what’s going to be important and what is disposable.   If a great idea for your future has no emotion attached to it– nothing experiential or sensorial involved—your mind will most likely deem it to be not important and chuck it out along with the old grocery list.   You continue along your path unchanged and frustrated that these good “ideas” aren’t having any impact on your life.

A good Hypnotherapist can help you create a total experience under hypnosis where you will see, taste, touch, smell and hear yourself experiencing your goals.   With these goals fully “charged” your mind won’t dismiss them as unimportant but will begin to play around with them– putting them into your dream life, unconsciously being on the lookout for paths and people that will lead you to them.  You may notice more synchronicities and coincidences—finding yourself in the right place at the right time.

Without the benefit of professional guidance, imagination and repetition can work just as well and simply running through the feelings and visceral experiences of your superior future each night right before you go to sleep (when you actually pass through a natural hypnotic state) can make an remarkable imprint on your sub-conscious patterns and expectations.
